These are step by step instructions on how to take cuttings from a Japanese Flowering
Cherry tree. I have also had success using this method on other species of trees. If you
have
any further questions please just e-mail me at and I will respond as soon as
possible, usually within 24 hrs. FOR BEST RESULTS USE CLEAN AND STERILE
SUPPLIES!!

To begin you must gather all supplies and sterilize them, You may use 2 table spoons of bleach to
1gallon of water for this purpose. Either rinse supplies or wipe them down with a clean paper towel
or rag then wipe dry.
Supplies: A. Large deep clear plastic tub with lid w/hole drilled into side. See picture B circled in
black.
B. Mixture of perlite and turface ( also called "oil dry") to a depth of 4-5inches in
bottom of tub and give it a soaking so that it is wet from top to bottom.
C. E. F. Dip'n Grow and Hormodin 3 ( I use both together ).
I also use a box knife with a new blade and sharp scissors ( Not shown ).
Small plastic dish for powdered Hormodin 3 ( Shown in D ).
H. Plastic cup or something to fill with water to hold the cuttings ( Shown in N. )
T - U Water bed heating mate f possible not completely necessary though and some
fluorescent lights.
D. I mix the Dip in grow double in strength according to the instructions for hardwood cuttings. I
put 2 tablespoons of Homodin 3 in a small plastic dish.
G. The 2 Japanese Flowering Cherry "Yoshino" trees that I will be taking the cuttings from. I
planted them out in my back yard in spring of 2005 they were two (2) feet tall, now they are six (6)
and seven (7) feet tall. I am sure they would be taller but I keep taking cuttings from them and
shorting them in the process.
H. I take my cuttings in June-August and they are of this years current growth. Cut branches just
below a leaf bud, maybe about 1/4". Using a sharp box knife with a new sterile blade at a 45 degree
angle.

M.- N. Place cuttings in a glass of water.
O. - P. - Q. Cut leaves in half to shorten.
J.- K. Next cut off the soft tips, these will just wilt and die off anyway.
L. Remove the bottom 3-4 sets of leaves and any small buds at the base of the leaf. If any buds or
portion of leaf is left they will rot and kill the cutting, so be sure and have a clean stem to insert into
the rooting medium. Leaving 2 - 8 leaves on the stem, I prefer 3 - 5 leaves.
